Product Introduction

Spent lithium batteries are a recycling goldmine — and a serious safety bomb. Charged Li-ion cells can short-circuit during crushing, releasing explosive electrolyte vapor and triggering catastrophic thermal runaway. Standard shredders cannot handle the fire, gas, and toxic fume risks. Recycling processors face a critical bottleneck: how do you safely feed hazardous, energy-dense batteries into a shredder without endangering your facility?

Our Heavy-Duty Lithium Battery Shredder is engineered specifically to neutralize these dangers. With a fully sealed, nitrogen-inerted cutting chamber, oxygen is displaced to prevent combustion. The twin-shaft, ultra-low-speed shearing tears through 18650 cells, pouch batteries, and complete EV modules without generating sparking heat. Electrolyte is contained, captured, and safely vented. The result: safe, continuous battery shredding that liberates black mass, copper foil, aluminum foil, and plastic separators for downstream hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical recovery. Don’t gamble with battery fires — use a shredder built for the chemistry.

Product Features

Full Nitrogen Inerting & Oxygen Displacement The cutting chamber is a completely sealed vessel connected to a nitrogen supply system. Oxygen levels inside are continuously monitored and maintained below combustion thresholds. This eliminates the primary cause of battery fires during shredding — oxidation of flammable electrolytes. Optional CO2 or foam fire suppression provides an additional safety layer.
Ultra-Low-Speed, Spark-Free Crushing Twin counter-rotating shafts run at an extremely slow 10–18 rpm, generating negligible frictional heat. Unlike high-speed hammer mills that can short-circuit and ignite cells on impact, our controlled shearing action cracks open batteries gradually without sparking or creating localized hot spots. This protects both your facility and the valuable black mass from thermal degradation.
Sealed Electrolyte Containment & Gas Extraction The shredding chamber is gas-tight, with all shaft penetrations using specialized chemical-resistant mechanical seals. Volatile electrolyte vapors released during crushing are captured by an integrated gas extraction and scrubbing system, preventing escape into the workplace. Condensed electrolyte can be collected for compliant disposal or recovery.
Explosion-Proof Design & ATEX-Ready Components The shredder’s electrical components, sensors, and motors are rated for potentially explosive atmospheres. Explosion relief panels on the chamber safely vent any sudden pressure surge. The entire system is designed according to ATEX/IECEx principles for processing flammable materials.
Black Mass Liberation Without Contamination Our blade geometry is optimized to delaminate battery layers: copper and aluminum foils are sheared from the electrode coatings, and plastic separators are chopped. The resulting black mass powder is highly liberated and free of metallic cross-contamination — critical for achieving high recovery rates in downstream cobalt, nickel, and lithium extraction.

Applicable Material

Battery Materials We Shred

  • 18650 & Cylindrical Cells: Consumer electronics cells, power tool batteries, and cylindrical EV cells. Crushed safely in bulk; steel casings are sheared and separated from black mass downstream.

  • Pouch Cells: Lithium polymer pouch cells from smartphones, tablets, laptops, and EV battery packs. Gentle shearing prevents internal shorting during processing.

  • Prismatic Cells & Modules: Large prismatic cells and complete battery modules from electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Pre-discharged and disassembled into manageable sections for safe feeding.

  • End-of-Life EV Battery Packs: Complete or partially dismantled EV traction battery packs. Our larger models (LBR-1000+) can accept entire sub-modules after mechanical size reduction upstream.

  • Battery Production Scrap: Off-spec electrodes, foil trim, separator waste, and rejected cells from battery manufacturing lines. Recovers valuable cathode and anode materials.

  • Black Mass Concentrate Preparation: Shredded battery material, 15–30mm, perfectly conditioned for secondary granulation and black mass separation via screening, air classification, and magnetic separation.

FAQ

Is it really safe to shred charged lithium batteries? Batteries should always be deeply discharged before shredding to minimize stored energy. After discharge, our nitrogen-inerted, sealed shredder provides a safety envelope. The absence of oxygen, combined with ultra-low-speed shearing, prevents thermal runaway. We do not recommend shredding fully charged batteries; a pre-discharge step is essential.
How do you prevent electrolyte fires and explosions? Three layers: first, nitrogen inerting keeps the chamber below combustion oxygen levels. Second, ultra-low-speed shearing generates no sparks or ignition heat. Third, explosion relief panels and an integrated gas extraction system manage pressure and safely remove volatile vapors.
What happens to the electrolyte during shredding? The liquid electrolyte vaporizes upon cell opening and is captured by the sealed gas extraction system. It passes through a condenser and/or scrubber, where it is neutralized or recovered. Solid electrolyte (salts) remains mixed with the black mass and can be further processed downstream.
Can the machine handle a mix of different battery types? Yes. Our shredders process a mixed stream of cylindrical, pouch, and prismatic cells, as well as small battery modules. The PLC-controlled feeding system adapts to varying sizes and material toughness.
How often do blades and seals require maintenance? Battery processing involves copper and aluminum foils, which are relatively soft. Blade re-sharpening intervals are typically 500–800 operating hours. Mechanical seals should be inspected weekly and replaced annually or as indicated by monitoring. We supply a full maintenance schedule and training.
Do you supply the complete recycling line, including black mass separation? Yes. We provide complete systems: pre-shredding → secondary grinding → screening → air separation → magnetic separation → clean black mass, copper, aluminum, and plastic fractions. Full engineering, hazard assessment, and commissioning support are included.
